22nd January 2022 – At least 7 people were killed, and many more injured after a level 3 fire broke out on the 18th floor inside a 20-storey residential building in Mumbai this morning.
The fire broke out around seven thirty in the morning in the Kamla Building located opposite the Gandhi Hospital at Gowalia Tank in Mumbai’s Tardeo area.
The Municipal corporation said that 13 fire engineers were rushed to the spot.
One of the fire officials said that, “The fire broke out in house number 1904, and the smoke spread to the entire building. A fire system was in place but it was not working. So we had to carry hose from downstairs. Electrical ducts and electrical cables had completely melted.” He further added that the cause of the fire is yet to be know, and is being investigated.
Footage from the scene showed massive smoke plume fill the sky, and flames coming out of the building.
The officials have said that the fire has been been contained now.
Prime Minister Modi has announced that the families of those who died would be given an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh each, and that the injured persons would get Rs. 50,000 each.
Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray visited the site, and announced that a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh would be given to the families of those who lost their lives in the unfortunate event.
He tweeted, “There were reports about 2 hospitals refusing treatment, however both hospitals informed me that they have admitted & treated some of those injured in this fire.”
Officials said the injured have been admitted to different hospitals, while seven have been discharged after treatments.
