“Maintain peace and harmony,”: CM Basavaraj Bommai requests Karnataka students.
Protests erupted in various places of Karnataka states following the incident on February 3rd when some students were denied entry into their educational institute wearing hijab. Later the students were allowed to write their exams in separate rooms.
The incident was followed by protests by students who chose to wear hijab across the state. A section of them filed the petition in the High court against the order.
The protests created a stir amongst different political outfits and people in the state & social media who support & oppose the institution’s decision. The issue escalated when students who helped the institution’s action started wearing saffron scarfs to the schools.
Things went out of control when protesting people started to shout slogans such as ‘Jai Shri Ram,’ ‘Allahu Akbar’ and pelt stones at each other. Media captured during protests on social media even showed a man climbing a flag post in an institution to unveil the national flag and replace it with a saffron one.
The state authorities immediately imposed 144 in places of protest & areas surrounding the high court where the case is being taken into hearing tonight.
The CM of the state, following the incidents, ordered all schools & colleges to be shut across Karnataka for the next three days to maintain peace & harmony. He also asked the students & all other stakeholders to maintain peace & harmony until things settle through the microblogging site Twitter.
