February 12, 2022: Amid the tensions between USA and Russia, India planned to kick off “the Milan exercise,” a joint naval exercise in which Russia and USA are expected to participate.
As per the sources, USA and Russia have confirmed their presence in the Milan exercise between February 26, 2022, and March 4, 2022. But they didn’t verify their kind of presence, either that may be a person or the warships.
The sources said India extended invitations to 46 world countries, and 35 countries confirmed their presence.
The Milan exercise was kicked off in 1995 at Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Singapore. This exercise had grown positively with the participation of 17 countries in the previous activity.
Sources confirmed that along with the other ships, an Anti-Submarine warfare exercise would be taking place in this 11th edition of the Milan exercise for the first time. The host shifted it to Visakhapatnam because of a larger sea room requirement due to the increasing participation.
“Milan” means “union” or “meeting.” It was initiated to promote the collective responsibilities of maritime security.
The 2022 edition of Milan was titled “Camaraderie Cohesion Collaboration.”
The Milan exercise – Plan
February 25 to February 28, 2022 – The Harbour Phase
In this phase, the participating navies will discuss the maritime topic of common issues and provide solutions.
March 1 to March 4, 2022 – The Sea Phase
In this phase, professional competitions will take place along with the planned conferences.
Also, in this phase, the lessons learned, inputs from the participants, and other suggestions gathered from harbor interactions will be consolidated to improvise the combined operational experience at sea.
