14th January 2022 – In a major boost to Indian vaccines, India’s own vaccine Covaxin has been recognized as “Universal Vaccine for adults and Children”
Bharat Biotech said that it has achieved the goal of developing a global vaccine against Covid-19.
“Covaxin is now a universal vaccine for adults and children. Our goals of developing a global vaccine against Covid-19 have been achieved and all product development for licensure has been completed,” the vaccine manufacturer said in a statement on Thursday, according to news agency ANI.
The Hyderabad based firm, on Friday, has sought approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), to accept the vaccine for regular use. Currently the vaccine is authorized only for emergency use in India.
The Whole Time Director of the firm, V Krishna Mohan, is learned to have submitted the pre-clinical and the clinical data along with the complete information of the manufacturing and controls, and the chemistry of the vaccine in order to seek approval for regular market use of the drug. However, the full follow up data of the clinical trials are yet to be submitted to the DCGI.
Earlier this week, the Serum Institute of India, has submitted all the data requested by the DCGI to approve Covishield for regular use. It has been calculated that more than 100 crore doses of Covishield has been administered to the people of India.
Covaxin, on the other hand has administered only 12% of the vaccines used in India. However, Covaxin is the only vaccine, that is being given to the young Indians of the age group 15-18 years.
The authorization for Covaxin is imminent, given that a recent study conducted by the Emory Vaccine Centre showed that the third shot of the vaccine has increased its effectiveness up to 90%.
