February 10, 2022 – Ashish Mishra, the main accused, in plowing protesting farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh, has been granted bail by the Allahabad High Court today.
His bail has been granted amid the Uttar Pradesh Elections.
On October 3, Ashish Mishra, the son of Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni, allegedly drove the SUV that ran over four protesting farmers and one journalist during the protest against the three farm laws.
Videos showed an SUV hitting and plowing down farmers without decreasing the speed. Following this, violence broke out in which three more people were killed. A total of 8 people died that day.
Following this, Mishra was arrested, and the Supreme Court ordered a special probe in this regard. The Supreme Court ordered an inquiry as the Uttar Pradesh Police and Administration were accused of being slow in their investigation.
Ashish Mishra’s lawyer claimed that he had produced over 150 photos to the investigation team to prove that his client was not present at the incident site that day. But the evidence was disregarded. “There is no cogent evidence against my client,” he said.
Ajay Mishra, however, continues to be a Minister in the Central government amid calls for his sacking.
On Wednesday, The Prime Minister stated to news agency ANI that the Yogi government was working transparently in the probe.
“The state government gave its consent for whatever committee the Supreme Court wanted, for whichever judge the Supreme Court wanted for the probe. The state government is working transparently,” he said.
Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra questioned the timing of his bail.
