The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI), has shown a green signal to market authorisation of two Covid-19 vaccines, Covaxin and Covishield for use in the adult population inclusive of certain conditions. Conditional Market Authorization is the term that emerged during this pandemic to fast-track drug access to patients with certain conditions met. Both the manufacturers have to submit the data regarding the ongoing clinical trials of their formulations with due analysis every six months or earlier if available.

Even though it is approved the data on vaccination happening in the country has to be updated in CoWIN platform. Initially when Covid hit India only 3% of the population was fully vaccinated whereas currently 95% of adults are vaccinated with the first dose and 74% of adults are vaccinated with both doses. The precautionary doses are being given to frontline workers and senior citizens.

The pricing regarding the vaccines is yet to be unveiled by the government. The Health Ministry stated, “The latest approval accorded by DCGI for conditional market authorization to two Covid-19 vaccines in the country indicates the promptness and timeliness with which the public response strategy and decision making apparatus of the country has responded to the emerging needs during the pandemic,”.

The Ministry also added that Omicron has become a major variant in India in January 2022.
