28th January 2022 – India and Philippines have signed a contract of Rs 2770 crore, to export BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.

The deal, will pave way for more such deals with other Asean countries like Vietnam and Indonesia.

“The contract is also strategically significant in the backdrop of China’s expansionism and strong arm tactics with its neighbours in the South China sea,” a source said TOI.

The source added, “This contract is for the Phillippines Navy for coastal defence. The next could be a bigger contract for its Army. Similarly, talks for exporting the BrahMos missiles to Indonesia are in advanced stage.”

With this deal, the Phillippines will be getting 3 missile batteries of the BrahMos cruise missile. This weapon travels at a speed of 2.8 Mach, which is almost three times the speed of sound. Along with this, Phillippines the training

Philippines in the recent months has been battling with China over the South China territorial claims. China has been aggressive in its claim in the disputed South China Sea.

The “Notice of Award” was signed by Lorenzana on the 31st of December. A team of Phillippine Navy had visited the production unit of BrahMos Aerospace in Hyderabad as a part of the contract signing process.

It is also said that other countries like Saudi Arabia, South Africa and UAE have shown interest in BrahMos missiles, as it is said to be a “precision strike weapon .”

India also has plans to sell Akash missile systems to countries like Phillippines,Indonesia, UAE, Vietnam, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kenya and Algeria. The Akash missiles have the ability to intercept aircraft, drones, subsonic missiles at a range of 25 km.

As a boost for defence exports, Mauritius has signed a contract for export of Advanced Light Combat Helicopters.
