26th January 2022 – New Indian white ball skipper Rohit Sharma has cleared his fitness test on Wednesday, and will be leading the team for the white ball challenge against the West Indies.
Sources have confirmed to news agency ANI, that,”Yes, Rohit has cleared his fitness test and he will be leading the side in the upcoming series against West Indies.”
Earlier, Rohit had suffered from hamstring injury, and had to miss the South Africa test and ODI series. He underwent rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).
His absence was well felt in the test and ODI series against South Africa, as India returned with just one win in the entire tour, losing the test series 1-2, and losing the ODI series 0-3.
The Windies series at home will be his full time assignment as captain.
Ravichandran Ashwin, on the other hand who made a comeback into ODIs in the South Africa series will not be available for selection as he is undergoing treatment.
Similarly, Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya are still not fit enough for selection. Although Jadeja was seen batting and bowling at the NCA, he has to wait for the fitness report for his selection. But Pandya on the other hand is said to be not fully fit.
The team selection for the 6 white ball games including 3 ODIs and 3T20Is will be done this week. It is learnt that the selection committee has decided to rest some of the regulars to manage their workload.
New ball bowler Bumrah is expected to be rested, while fellow opening bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar may not make it to the squad. Many key players may also miss the series as a part of workload management.
